Diamonds in the Rough

The benefit for a company to have good design within a badly-designed industry is that the company begins to stand above the competition. Good design is not just something that is pretty – it is functional, smart, and it works. The fact that it looks pretty is only a bonus, because “pretty” is pretty subjective.

Simple, unique, understandable.

A legacy needs to be embraced.

One industry that I am going to use as an example is the Hybrid Engine industry. Hybrid companies, unless you are an automaker, generally don’t look that classy, because they are selling a product that already walks the walk. This was a great opportunity for Hybrid Conversions, a friendly and intelligent company outside of Atlanta. Focus was put on keeping their brand simple, and making them look larger than they were. What it does is it begins to make Hybrid Conversions into a brand name product, and it makes all of their competitors look like mom and pop shops.

Another industry worth mentioning is the Insurance and Annuities industry. Each company’s inability to differentiate themselves from the rest leaves room for opportunity. Using Fran Tarkenton as a Brand Name, and embracing that brand can make it larger than name recognition alone. So now, not only will you be getting involved with a company with a familiar name, but that company also makes you feel comfortable with your decision because of the nostalgic consistency in which their materials are presented.
